Hope in tough times – John Crapper (South Yorkshire):
In November 2023, my wife Rachel, through a routine mammogram, found that she had breast cancer. It was a shock but Rachel’s mother had been diagnosed when Rachel was 17 and it took her life when Rachel was at university, so it is fair to say that the disease had always stalked Rachel. The medical staff who treated Rachel were great and very reassuring that everything would be fine. Unfortunately though, we went through a series of scans, tests and appointments and at each one, the results became more worrying. Finally, we went to one where although the consultant quickly tried to not dwell on the latest results, it was clear that the cancer was on the march. It had spread and would kill Rachel. We were both in our fifties, with kids at university and certainly not yet retired…
